Andrew Mitra – Principal Lawyer

Andrew Mitra is an experienced and compassionate advocate who has dedicated his career to helping people navigate the justice system with confidence and dignity.

Andrew began his legal career in private practice before joining Victoria Legal Aid’s Ballarat office, where he held the positions of Senior Crime Lawyer and Senior Family Violence Lawyer. During this time, he developed deep expertise in criminal law, family violence, and child protection, appearing daily in court and providing strategic advice in high-stakes matters.

Andrew is an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law and regularly appears in the Magistrate’s Court in a range of criminal matters, including bail applications, contested matters and guilty pleas. He also appears in the County Court in appeals and breach proceedings and in the Criminal Division of the Children’s Court.

Andrew is highly experienced in family violence intervention order proceedings, including representing clients at contested hearings. As Senior Family Violence Lawyer at Victoria Legal Aid, he was responsible for training new lawyers in family violence matters and had oversight of Victoria Legal Aid’s family violence practice in the region.

Andrew is highly experienced in child protection matters and regularly appears for parents, carers and children in child protection proceedings in the Family Division of the Children’s Court.
